Program

The two protagonists of this concert rank among the most distinctive members of the up-and-coming generation of singers. Notwithstanding his tight schedule filled with studies abroad and international artistic commitments, tenor Petr Nekoranec has been a frequent and most welcome guest of the New Town Hall concert series. He has received several major awards, including absolute victory in the Francesco Viñas International Singing Competition in Barcelona (January 2017). Between 2014 and 2016, he was a member of the Bavarian State Opera in Munich and its opera studio, and between 2016 and 2018 he participated in the Metropolitan Opera Lindemann Program, becoming the first ever Czech artist to be admitted to this distinguished project. Since September 2018 he has been soloist of the Stuttgart Opera. During his debut season, he will be appearing in three major roles: namely, those of Rossini’s Almaviva (Il barbiere di Siviglia) and Ramiro (La Cenerentola), and Donizetti’s Ernesto (Don Pasquale). Petr studied voice with Prof. Jarmila Chaloupková at the Pardubice Conservatoire, and he currently works with the Italian educator, Antonio Carangelo.

American baritone John Brancy has to his credit an equally impressive record of international singing competition awards. These include first prizes in the song category from the Concours Musical International de Montréal and the Lotte Lenya Competition in New York (both 2018); as well as second prize from the Wigmore Hall Competition in London, Press Award from the Belvedere Competition in Moscow, and victory in the Marilyn Horne Song Competition (all 2017). His opera stage creations have so far included the roles of Eugene Onegin (Florida Grand Opera), Harlequin in Ariadne auf Naxos (Opéra National de Lorraine, and Opera Theater of Saint Louis), Malatesto in Don Pasquale (Glyndebourne Festival Opera Tour, and Vorarlberger Landestheater in Bregenz), Demetrius in A Midsummer Night’s Dream (Pacific Opera Victoria), Dancaire/Morales in Carmen (Frankfurt Opera), Albert in Werther (Stadttheater Klagenfurt), and others. In November 2018 he will be appearing in Frankfurt, as Pete in Olga Neuwirth’s Lost Highway, and in Lisbon, as Mercutio in Gounod’s Roméo et Juliette.

In Prague, the two singers will be accompanied on the piano here by a distinguished American conductor and pianist, William Kelley.
